About us

Mission Statement:  We work to eliminate fuel insecurity in Maine by improving access to fuel for people in need, building strong community partnerships, and mobilizing the public by leveraging renewable resources.

Maine Wood Banks Network is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to expanding and strengthening wood banks across the state.  We enhance efficiency, scalability, and collaboration for both new and existing wood banks while they maintain local control. By joining our network, wood banks gain access to vital resources, shared equipment, fundraising opportunities, and professional services—all designed to increase efficiency, reduce risk, and maximize impact.

With Maine’s heavily forested landscape (89% coverage) and half of households burn wood for heat, the need for accessible firewood has never been greater. Join us in making a difference for Maine families.

Why Maine Needs More Wood Banks

🔥 Firewood is a local, renewable resource that can provide emergency heating relief.

🔥 Over 182,000 Mainers rely on wood as their primary heat source.

🔥 Over 146,000 Mainer's lived in poverty in 2023.

🔥 Maine is the most heavily forested state in the U.S. (89% forest coverage).
🔥 Half of Maine households use wood for at least part of their heating.
🔥 20% of households spend over 35% of their income on housing costs.

Existing wood banks primarily operate along Maine’s coast as volunteer-run nonprofits providing temporary fuel assistance. By joining the Maine Wood Banks Network, new and existing wood banks can reduce costs, lower risk, access critical resources, and scale their impact—all while maintaining local control.

Together, we can ensure that every Maine family stays warm.
