Why Maine Needs More Wood Banks

🔥 Firewood is a local, renewable resource that can provide emergency heating relief.

🔥 Half of Maine households heat with wood and over 182,000 Mainers rely on wood as their primary heat source.

🔥 More than 10% of Mainer's (146,000) lived in poverty in 2025.

🔥 20% of households spend over 35% of their income on housing costs.

Existing wood banks operate as volunteer-run non-profit organizations providing temporary fuel assistance.

By joining the Maine Wood Banks Network, new and existing wood banks can reduce costs, lower risk, access critical resources, and scale their impact—all while maintaining local control.

Together, we can ensure that every Maine family stays warm.
